Bhojwar Masala Dhal

Ingredients

  • Gram Dhal ยฝ cup
  • Tuhar dhal 1 cup (both the dhals to be boiled for 3-4 whistles in a cooker)
  • Tamarind 1 hand full (to be soaked and pulp taken out after some time)
  • Khadu 1 (cut in to big pieces)
  • Jeera 1 tsp
  • Rai 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves 2 stalks
  • Green c hillies 2-3
  • Tomatoes 3-4
  • Methi powder ยผ tsp
  • Cinnamon powder ยฝ tsp
  • Cloves powder ยฝ tsp
  • Tej patta or bay leaves 1-2 (roasted and powdered along with cinnamon and cloves)
  • Jeera powder 2 tsps
  • Pepper powder ยฝ tsp
  • Chillie powder 1ยฝ tsp
  • Turmeric powder ยฝ tsp
  • Oil 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Boil both the dhals in a pressure cooker for about 4 whistles by adding about 2ยฝ-3 cups of water. Once the cooking is done, do not remove the lid of the pressure cooker. After the steam settles down in the cooker, open the lid and mash the dhals coarsely.
  2. To the dhal add the tamarind pulp and keep aside after mixing well
  3. Heat oil in a kadai and add the jeera and rai seeds.
  4. Let them splutter then add the curry leaves, tomatoes and green chillies and let it fry for 1 minute.
  5. Then add Turmeric powder, chillie powder, spice powder, methi powder, pepper powder and let it fry.
  6. Put off the fire and add this seasoning to the dhal.
  7. Then add the khadu (cut into big pieces) to the dhal and give it one whistle in the pressure cooker.
  8. This dhal needs no further seasoning.

Notes

Fried rice is a good accompaniment for this dhal.
