Modhu Dhal Or Mudha Pappu

Ingredients

  • Tuvar dhal 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder ยผ Tsp
  • Water 1ยฝ cup
  • Onion 1 (chopped)
  • Green chillies 2 (chopped)
  • Curry leaves 2 stalks (chopped)
  • Turmeric powder ยผ tsp
  • Oil 2 Tbsp
  • Salt 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Wash the dhal well. Put it in a pressure cooked with ยผ tsp of turmeric powder and 1ยฝ cups of water.
  2. Cook the dhal for 3-4 whistles and switch of the stove. Let the dhal remain in the pressure cooker until the steam settles down.
  3. Then open the lid of the pressure cooker and check if it seems grainy. Put it back to cook for another couple of whistles in the pressure cooker. Add water if required.
  4. However, if It is cooked then mash the dhal well and keep it aside.
  5. In a kadai add the oil and heat it up. To this add the chopped onion, green chillies, curry leaves and the salt. Mix well and let it fry until the onions turn translucent. Add the turmeric powder to this seasoning.
  6. Now add the mashed dhal to this onion seasoning and mix thoroughly. Cook this dhal on a low flame until it comes together as per the required consistency.
  7. This dhal hardens as it cools down. So add a little water while frying the dhal with the onion seasoning.
