Red Dhal

Red Dhal

Ingredients

  • Masoor or red dhal 1 cup
  • Ginger garlic paste ยฝ tsp
  • Curry leaves 2 stalks
  • Coriander leaves (Kothmir) 4-5 stalks
  • Green chillies 2 (slit)
  • Turmeric powder ยผ tsp
  • Tomatoes 2 (small) or 1 (medium)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water 1ยฝ cup

For seasoning

  • Curry leaves 2 stalks
  • Onion 1 (small) cut into slices
  • Mustard seeds ยฝ tsp
  • Oil or ghee 1 Tbsp

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker, wash the red dhal and add 1 ยฝ cups of water.
  2. Add ginger garlic paste, washed curry leaves, coriander leaves, slit green chillies, turmeric powder and tomatoes (squeezed), to the washed dhal.
  3. Let the dhal cook for 3-4 whistles.
  4. Allow it to rest for 5-8 minutes or until the steam settles down.
  5. Open the cooker lid and add salt.
  6. Mash the dhal with a dhal masher and add more water (ยฝ cup) based on the dhal consistency and set aside.
  7. For the seasoning, to a kadai/wok add oil/ghee to heat up on medium heat.
  8. Add all the seasoning ingredients (listed above). Stir fry till light brown.
  9. Switch off the stove and add the seasoning to the dhal. Put the pressure cooker back on the stove to simmer for 2-3 minutes.

Notes

Red dhal can be eaten with Rice/Roti/Chapati or any Vegetable Stir Fry/Beef Chops/Chicken Fry.
