Red Dhal

Ingredients
- Masoor or red dhal 1 cup
- Ginger garlic paste ยฝ tsp
- Curry leaves 2 stalks
- Coriander leaves (Kothmir) 4-5 stalks
- Green chillies 2 (slit)
- Turmeric powder ยผ tsp
- Tomatoes 2 (small) or 1 (medium)
- Salt to taste
- Water 1ยฝ cup
For seasoning
- Curry leaves 2 stalks
- Onion 1 (small) cut into slices
- Mustard seeds ยฝ tsp
- Oil or ghee 1 Tbsp
Instructions
- In a pressure cooker, wash the red dhal and add 1 ยฝ cups of water.
- Add ginger garlic paste, washed curry leaves, coriander leaves, slit green chillies, turmeric powder and tomatoes (squeezed), to the washed dhal.
- Let the dhal cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Allow it to rest for 5-8 minutes or until the steam settles down.
- Open the cooker lid and add salt.
- Mash the dhal with a dhal masher and add more water (ยฝ cup) based on the dhal consistency and set aside.
- For the seasoning, to a kadai/wok add oil/ghee to heat up on medium heat.
- Add all the seasoning ingredients (listed above). Stir fry till light brown.
- Switch off the stove and add the seasoning to the dhal. Put the pressure cooker back on the stove to simmer for 2-3 minutes.
Notes
Red dhal can be eaten with Rice/Roti/Chapati or any Vegetable Stir Fry/Beef Chops/Chicken Fry.
